Construction

Since 1970, we have built more than 70 craft from 10 ft. to 54 ft., 14 lbs. to 29,000 lbs. We are experienced in traditional wood construction and fiberglass. Core materials such as verticell, balsa, PVC and urethane foams, as well as carbon and Kevlar fibers have been used in conjunction with vacuum bag techniques. We have built small craft, cruising and racing designs, and multihulls.

Most recently we have limited our projects to the use of wood and the WEST system epoxy products. Over the last few years these projects have incorporated the best and most beautiful of the old Herreshoff designs (Father & Sons) and the best of the modern materials to produce a durable, low maintenance boat that can still offer the comfort and warmth of wood. Wood is still the best engineering material for boats because of its weight to stiffness ratio, thermal insulation and sound insulation. The combination of strip-planking, double-diagonal vacuum bagged veneers and outer skin of fiberglass has proven to be a winner in first class yacht construction.

In addition to fine craftsmanship, the employees here have a love for the sea. In fact eleven people who have worked here have made transatlantic passages. Although you personally may plan nothing more adventurous than a weekend cruise with the family on Long Island Sound or Buzzards Bay, your boat should be built by people who understand the demands the sea makes on a boat. We know how to build a sound vessel that can stand the test.
